Three Killed In Head-On Collision

On Tuesday, October 2, 2018, around 12:00 noon, Miller/Baker 911 received a call that an accident with injuries had occurred on Highway 91 North at Johnny Freeman Road.

Miller County Sheriff’s deputies, Miller County EMS, Miller County Fire and Rescue were all dispatched to the location that had been called in by a third party call.

While en route to the scene, dispatch learned that the accident was on Highway 91 South close to the Miller/Seminole County lines. All of the Miller County First Responders were turned around toward the scene of the accident in Seminole County. Miller County First Responders assisted Seminole First Responders at the accident scene, which was just inside of Seminole County.

The Georgia State Patrol report stated that Kenneth Wade Scarborough, age 62, of 6407 Ruby Drive, Columbus, was traveling north on State Route 91. Dell Ennis Kirkland of 6075 Scott Drive, Donalsonville, Ga. was listed as owner of the vehicle.

Paul G. Dukes, age 74, of 3885 Phillipsburg Road, Damascus, was traveling south on State Route 91 in a 2019 Kia Soul +. Paul G. Dukes of 300 Moore Street, Colquitt, was listed as the owner of the KIA Soul +.

Scarborough, driving a 1999 GMC New Sierra C15 truck, crossed the center line into Duke’s lane of travel, resulting in a head-on collision.

After impact, Scarborough’s vehicle rotated counter-clockwise and came to a final rest facing southwest in the southbound lane.

Duke’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and came to a final rest facing southwest.

Both Scarborough and Dukes, drivers of the vehicles, received fatal injuries and was pronounced at the scene of the accident.

A passenger in Dukes’ vehicle, Annie Price, age 74, of 300 Moore Street, Colquitt, received serious injuries and was transported via Florida Air Heart to Southeast Alabama Medical in Dothan, Alabama.

Ms. Price later succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, October 3, 2018.

The Georgia Vehicle Crash Report indicated that the contributing factor in the accident was due to the GMC on the wrong side of the roadway.

An alcohol drug test is pending against the driver of the GMC, Scarborough.

The reporting officer was Darren Heard of the Georgia State Patrol Post 14 in Colquitt.

Also at approximately 1:14 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2018, a 2008 Nissan Rogue was traveling north on GA 309, in Decatur County. A 2010 John Deere tractor was parked on the shoulder of the roadway, while the driver exited and closed a field gate. Due to the size of the tractor and the ditch the tractor was unable to fully exit the road, leaving the left tires on the roadway. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Nissan did not see the tractor and struck the rear tires with the front of the Nissan.

The Nissan was driven by 79-year-old Calvin Hunter from Whigham. He also died from his injuries on scene.
