Our library at First Friday

Catherine Vanstone, featured speaker. Catherine Vanstone, featured speaker. The program for the First Friday Chamber Breakfast was the Miller County – James W. Merritt, Jr. Memorial Library, on Friday morning, September 16, 2016, in Cotton Hall. Ponder Enterprises sponsored the program to a good crowd with a Hardee’s breakfast.

Catherine Vanstone, assistant director for technology, training, and development, Southwest Georgia Regional Library System was the featured program. Mrs. Vanstone started by highlighting the services of the Southwest Georgia Library for Accessible Services. This provides resources for the blind and physically handicapped to 22 counties, which includes Miller County. Popular fiction and nonfiction as well as the Bible are available in a digital format that is sent via the mail to qualifying individuals. When they are finished with the book, it is returned by mail to the library. New assistive technology was demonstrated, along with a digital book and player. As only 1.4% of the population is eligible for the services offered by the Southwest Georgia Library for Accessible Services, everyone was encouraged to help promote this wonderful program that provides reading material to those who can no longer see.

The Miller County – James W. Merritt, Jr. Memorial Library has some great programs coming up. Toddler Time is moving to 10 a.m. on the Third Thursday of each month. The change in time is so the library can offer STEAM programs in the afternoon. A recipient of a STEAM grant, the library will be able to offer programs that incorporate technology tools such as a Makey Makey, a Lego Mindstorms robot, and Little Bits. For adults, a coloring program is in the planning stages. Please let Branch Manager Donna Weeks know if you are interested in coloring your way to less stress. The First Tuesday Book Club continues to be active with a membership of around 25 people. The library also offers introductory computer classes as well as advanced classes upon request. Please visit the library Monday – Friday 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Ms. Vanstone was thanked for speaking to the group about our great library, and for Ponder Enterprise for sponsoring the popular First Friday Breakfast program.
