Mr. Charlie Idus Womble, Sr. "Johnny"


Mr. Charlie Idus Womble, Sr. "Johnny" age 91, of Colquitt, GA, died July 23, 2015, at his residence after a brief battle with liver cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at 11:00 AM at Flat Creek Baptist Church in Miller County with Rev. Cory Thomas, Wesley Marshall (grandson), and Rev. Robert Johns officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Terry Phillips, Steve Holt, David Womble, Max Wallace, Billy Joe Newberry, and Don Simpson serving as pall bearers. Serving as honorary pall bearers are Bobby Widner, Danny Bush, Jack Holt, Randy Womble, Rusty Bradley, Tracey Futch, Joe Felix Womble, Johnny Creel, Kenny Kirkland, Mike Boyd, Charles Brackin, and members of the Colquitt American Legion.

Mr. Womble was a life long member of Flat Creek Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, and was a member of both the Colquitt American Legion, Post 0165, and the VFW. He retired from the Ga. Dept. of Revenue in the early 1980's and the Gwinnett County School Transportation Dept. He was also a proud member of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics transportation team. Mr. Womble loved traveling and learning about the history of various places in GA and the U.S. He always had a keen love for crops, livestock, and gardening, both vegetable and flowers, especially an avid interest in growing roses and garden vegetables. He will be remembered dearly for his deep love of family, and his desire to instill that love in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He always had an interesting story to tell and enjoyed good conversations with others.

Mr. Womble was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie S. and Claudia Martin Womble, and two brothers, Douglas Womble and Horace Womble. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Inez Holt Womble; his three children, Patricia W. Marshall (Thomas) of Albany, Charlie Womble (Genie) of Savannah, and Mickey Womble (DeeDee) of Cedartown. Grandchildren include Darrell Marshall of Albany, Wesley Marshall (Christy) of Leesburg,  Kate Marshall (Daniel McDonald) of Milledgeville, Scott Clifton of Atlanta, Kerri Cummings (Drew) of Lilburn, Tracey Love (Jon) of Savannah, Benjamin Womble and Sarah Beth Womble both of Cedartown. Great grandchildren are Reese, Russ, Cale and Caroline Marshall, Vidas Lenez Marshall-McDonald, Karlie Clifton, Breelyn and Baylor Love, and Liliana and Kali Rae Cummings. Surviving brothers are Carlton Womble, Buren (Martha) Womble, Wayne (Barbie) Womble, Waymon Womble, and sisters-in-law, Alice Womble, Calista Phillips (Rassie), and Eloise Holt.
