Outstanding Seniors recognized in sports

Under the directions of MCHS Athletic Director Ms. Joni Cook and announcer Ms. Dana Nunnery, this is the line-up for the seniors.

Dayton Amerson is the first senior to be recognized and he is son of Vance and Brenda Amerson. Dayton has been on the Pirates’ baseball team for 3 years and the tennis team for 2 years. Dayton received the 2014 MCHS tennis team MVP award. Dayton along with his partner went undefeated as the number 1 doubles. Heisalsoa4yearmember of the Beta Club, 3 year member of the FBLA, 2 year member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 1 year member of the Students for Christ. Dayton has received the Georgia Certificate of Merit Award. Dayton also was a 2014 Junior Marshal and a 2013 Sophomore Server at Miller County High School.


Senior tennis players, (l-r): Leo Maliano, Lane Sheffield, Dayton Amerson, Logan Gowan, and Slater Burke Senior tennis players, (l-r): Leo Maliano, Lane Sheffield, Dayton Amerson, Logan Gowan, and Slater Burke Vance Bailey is the second senior to be recognized and he is the son of Charlie Mac Bailey, II and the late Rene Bailey. He has played on the Pirates Golf team for 4 years. Vance received the Area Golf Player of the Year in 2013. Vance has made the All-Region team all 4 years as well as qualified for State all 4 years. He currently serves as the President of Students for Christ. Vance plans to attend Shorter University after graduation to become a preacher and play golf.

Slater Burke is our third senior to be recognized and he is the son of Gene and Jolene Burke. Slater has played on the Pirate tennis team or 4 years. Heisa4yearmember of the Beta Club and a 5 year member of the FFA. He has participated in the Leadership of Colquitt program. Slater was also a Junior Marshall for the 2014 graduation. Slater currently serves as Vice President of the Senior Class and will be an Honor Graduate.


Senior track Team players: Destiny Gilbert (l)and Macy Ford Senior track Team players: Destiny Gilbert (l)and Macy Ford Timothy Clay is the next senior to be recognized and he is the son of Tony and Pennie Clay. Tim has played on the Pirate baseball team for 3 years.

While on the baseball team, Tim has received the award for Most Improved Player and All-Region Honorable Mention. He has played on the MCHS Pirate Football team for 2 years and received the Most Outstanding Receiver Award. He has been a member of the FFA for 2 years hopes to graduates with honors. After graduation, Timothy plans to further his education at Georgia Southwestern University and major in Pre-Pharmacy.

Our next senior recognition was Macy Ford. Macy is the daughter of Beth Harpe. Macy has been on the track team for 1 year. After graduation, she plans to attend Darton State College to become an MRI technician.


Golf: Vance Bailey Golf: Vance Bailey Destiny Gilbert is the daughter of Ebony Hutchins and she has been on the track team for3years.Sheisa4year member of the FBLA and currently serves as secretary. Destiny is also the Senior Class Secretary. Destiny was chosen by her classmates to be a Senior Homecoming Representative.

Logan Gowan is our next senior and he is the son of Stephanie Toeneck and Bill Gowan. He has been on the tennis team for 2 years which he received the 2014 MCHS Tennis team MVP award. He and his partner went undefeated as the #1 Doubles. Loganisa4year member of the Beta Club and FBLA. He is currently the Vice-President of the FBLA. Logan was a 2014 Junior Marshall for the graduation last year. Logan has received the Yale Book Award and the Georgia Certificate of Merit award. Logan is currently participating in the dual enrollment program at Bainbridge State College and has earned 9 college credit hours thus far.

Landon Holmes is the son of Larry and Jackie Roland. Landon has been on the Pirate baseball team for 4 years. He received All-Region Honorable Mention honors his freshman year and was on the ALL-Region 1st team his sophomore and junior year. Landon isa4yearmemberof the FFA. After graduation, Landon says that he will most likely attend Georgia Southwestern University and would like to become a Physical Therapist.

Leo Maliano is the son Bendicto and Elizabeth Malinao. He has been on the Pirates team for 3 years. Leo received the ‘Co-Rookie of the Year” award in 2014. He has been a member of the Pirate Pride Marching Band for 7 years and has served as the Percussion Lieutenant all 4 years of high school. His band awards include the 2014 Director’s Award and the Most Valuable Percussion Player for 2011-12 and 2012-13. Leo is a member of the Beta Club and National Society of High School Scholars. Leo received the Miller County Nationals Society Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Scholarship and the Georgia Colored Rocks Prize Scholarship. Leo has made Principal’s Honor Roll since his freshman year.

DeShon Patterson is our next senior to be recognized and he is the son of Demetrice and Gracie Patterson. DeShon has played on the Pirate baseball team for 2 years. He has been a member of the Varsity basketball team for 1 year and MC football team for 3 years. He was chosen for the All-Region 1st team in football and received the team Captain Award. De’Shon is a member of the National High School Honor Society and the Leadership of Colquitt. Heisa3yearmemberof the National Beta Club. He has received the Merit Award from the University of Georgia. After graduation, he plans to attend college to major in Biology so that he can become an Anesthesiologist.

Lane and Luke Sheffield are the sons of Stacy Sheffield and Michelle Sheffield. Lane has been on the Pirates tennis for 2 years and plays double. He has been a percussionist for the Pirate Pride Marching Band for 5 years. He served as logistics captain his sophomore year and band cap- tain his junior and seniors years. Land played on the golf team his freshman and sophomore years and track team his junior year Landisa2yearmember oftheFBLAanda1year member of the FFA. Luke has been on the Pirate baseball team for 4 years. He also played on the Miller County High football team for 4 years. He is also a member of the FFA.

Our last senior is Cole Vann. Cole is the son of Mitch and Tammy Vann. Cole is a four year starter for the Pirates baseball team. His baseball awards consist of Perfect Game All American, OFFENSIVE Player of the Year for Region 1-A 2013 and 2014. He made the Georgia Dugout Top 40 Juniors and Top 100 Seniors in the state of Georgia. Cole is a 4 year member of the Beta Club, 3 year member of the FBLA, 2 year member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and 1 year member of the Student for Christ. He has been a sophomore server and Junior Marshall at MCHS. Cole received the Georgia Certificate of Merit award. Cole will attend Valdosta State University in the fall on a baseball scholarship.

To all the athletic seniors, thank you so much for giving your heart, hard work and dedication to our athletic program here at Miller County High School. Seniors, we are so proud of all of your accomplishments and wish you the best in the future .
